Be among the first 25 applicantsOverviewThis is an exciting opportunity to work as a Technical Fisheries Officer within the Fisheries Operations team based in Thames. This is part of the area Fisheries Biodiversity and Geomorphology department. Successful candidates will be expected to provide high quality fisheries advice to a variety of internal and external customers, taking a risk-based approach to help protect and improve the water environment and water-dependent wildlife. This position focuses on significant chalk stream habitat in the UK, including the River Kennet.ResponsibilitiesProvide high quality fisheries advice to internal and external customers using a risk-based approach to protect and improve the water environment and water-dependent wildlife.Deliver environmental outcomes and build strong relationships within the team and with internal and external stakeholders.Work independently and show good organisation and initiative.Contribute to river habitat enhancement work and support incident response as part of the fisheries duty officer roster (24hr standby).Support the Fisheries Operations team in advising on high-risk permits, consents, licences and planning applications to protect biodiversity and fisheries.The role has a strong area incident response element and requires flexible work patterns and participation in the 24hr out-of-hours roster.Team and environmentThe Fisheries Operations team uses a risk-based approach to protect and improve the water environment for fisheries. We promote angling opportunities, deliver the rod licence checking programme, provide incident response and undertake river habitat enhancement work.Experience/skills RequiredEssentialA degree in a relevant subject or equivalent professional experience.A good understanding of practical fisheries management techniques and excellent fish identification skills.A Full driving licence.DesirableA good general understanding of fisheries legislation and law.Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and proactively.Strong influencing skills with experience engaging key stakeholders.Confident communicator.Excellent time management with the ability to manage an unpredictable workload and balance priorities.Contact and additional informationThis role is office based (Farnham) with some flexibility and hybrid options. It requires a 2-hour in-hours and 4-hour out-of-hours incident response time, and travel across the area. A full driving licence is required. The role includes the responsibility of fisheries duty officer on a 24-hour standby roster. All Environment Agency staff receive training to support major incident responses.Interviews are expected to begin from 11 August.
