Technical Fisheries Officer

This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Technical Fisheries Officer within the Fisheries team based in the East Midlands, part of the Fisheries Biodiversity and Geomorphology department. The role focuses on significant water catchments within the East Midlands, providing high quality fisheries advice and a risk‑based approach to protect and improve the water environment and its water‑dependent wildlife.

Responsibilities

  • Provide fisheries advice to a variety of internal and external customers.
  • Take a risk‑based approach to help protect and improve the water environment and water‑dependent wildlife.
  • Deliver environmental outcomes and build strong relationships both within the team and with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work independently and on your own initiative, remaining well‑organised and confident.
  • Travel within the allocated catchment and across the East Midlands as required.
  • Participate in the 24‑hour out‑of‑hours roster and incident response duties.

Qualifications

  • A degree in a relevant subject or equivalent professional experience.
  • Good understanding of practical fisheries management techniques and excellent fish identification skills.
  • Full UK driving licence (required for travel across the area and field work).
  • Good general understanding of fisheries legislation and law (desirable).
  • Strong influencing skills and experience of engaging key stakeholders (desirable).
  • Self‑motivated, pro‑active, able to act independently and take initiative (desirable).
  • Excellent time‑management skills, able to manage an unpredictable workload and balance conflicting priorities (required).

Location and Travel

The role is based in Nottingham with flexibility and hybrid working options. Expect 1–2 days per week in the office. Travel across the area and work in the field will be required; therefore a full driving licence is essential.
