Route Services is a division of Network Rail that provides the Routes with services to maintain and operate the railway. This role sits within Supply Chain Operations (SCO), an area of the business which supplies and delivers the logistics, materials, components, rail and road fleet that enable maintenance and renewal of the railway.

About the Role

You will deliver all fleet engineering activities for the fleet to ensure it is fit-for-purpose and compliant with relevant legislation and standards. This role will be working on the High Output ballast cleaning systems. You will also deliver fleet engineering works which support continuous improvement of the fleet and enhance capabilities that meet business objectives of the customer.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide specialist input to the sourcing and delivery of maintenance, repair, modification and overhaul of fleet assets to ensure they are fit-for-purpose and can safely deliver customer requirements.
  • Provide specialist input to the production of engineering specifications and contract negotiations for maintenance, modification, renewal and construction of fleet assets to meet customer’s emerging business needs.
  • Identify potential modifications to the fleet assets to improve performance, capability, efficiency and service delivery. Manage the development of business cases and all engineering deliverables necessary to demonstrate compliance with commercial and engineering policy.
  • Develop and implement engineering management systems which are compliant with relevant legislation, company and industry standards.
  • Provide technical input to contract management, monitor KPIs and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Maintain positive relations with customers, suppliers, and between key internal departments.
  • Identify and manage the resolution of engineering issues, prioritisation of tasks and, where necessary, escalate where they have the potential to impact on service delivery.
  • Provide specialist input to the development and implementation of the engineering management strategy for the fleet, including maintenance, overhaul, improvements, spares and value engineering. Lead audit programs and local investigations as required.
  • Maintain own competence and development plan to support fleet engineering management.
  • As required by the business, attend incidents, support or provide the lead for operational fleet support.
  • Support the development of other engineers within the fleet community by mentoring / coaching

Essential

  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualifications or demonstrate equivalent experience (Level 4/5)
  • Substantial experience in a relevant engineering area
  • Sound knowledge of relevant policies and standards
  • An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques

Desirable

  • Degree in a relevant subject (Level 6)
  • Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer
  • Project management experience and awareness of project management techniques
  • Railway industry experience

How To Apply

Vacancy type: This role is permanent.

Location: This position can be based in York Holgate, Crewe, Sandiacre or Milton Keynes.

Hours: up to 35 hours per week with hybrid working (3 days in office) with travel to sites and suppliers as required. Flexible working can be considered.

Salary range: £43,588 to £51,719 per annum, depending on skills and experience.
