Overview

Flood and Coastal Risk Management - Advisor - Natural Flood Management (NFM) is a permanent role within the Strategy and Adaptation Department of the national Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. The role supports the £25 million NFM Programme through project tracking, grant management, and secretariat support, with opportunities to mainstream innovative approaches into the wider FCERM investment portfolio. The role involves hybrid working with some travel and overnight stays, and an incident response element which may attract additional pay and training/workplace adjustments.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the NFM Community of Practice and respond to stakeholder enquiries.
  • Lead specific workstreams (e.g., environmental and hydrological monitoring, permitting, asset management) with initiative and independence.
  • Support delivery and upscaling of NFM across England through project tracking and grant management.
  • Support presentation and mainstreaming of programme approaches into the wider FCERM investment portfolio.
  • Assist in incident response and business continuity activities as required.
  • Collaborate within a small, inclusive NFM Team and with Defra and partners to shape flood resilience strategy.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A relevant qualification or experience in Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM) or a related discipline is essential.
  • Experience in natural flood management – commissioning, funding, delivery, and upscaling opportunities and barriers.
  • Project and grant management experience.
  • Understanding of EA processes and governance (e.g., Scheme of Delegation and assurance).
  • Ability to build and sustain stakeholder relationships across delivery bodies.
  • Clear and effective communication skills;
  • Strong digital and data skills (coding, Power BI, Power Automate) and effective use of tracking and filing systems;
  • Experience using GIS tools and performing spatial data analysis.
