Overview

Flood and Coastal Risk Management - Advisor - Natural Flood Management (NFM) role. This permanent position supports the £25 million NFM Programme through project tracking, grant management, and secretariat support, with the aim of upscaling NFM across England and mainstreaming innovative approaches into the wider FCERM investment portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Support the NFM Programme through project tracking, grant management, and secretariat duties.
  • Help mainstream innovative NFM approaches trialled through the programme into the wider FCERM investment portfolio.
  • Coordinate the NFM Community of Practice and respond to stakeholder enquiries.
  • Lead specific workstreams with initiative and independence (e.g., environmental and hydrological monitoring, permitting, asset management).
  • Operate in a hybrid working environment with some travel and potential overnight stays.
  • Respond to incidents as part of a central incident role, including availability for incident response and business continuity; may attract additional payment and will receive full training and workplace adjustments to support the incident role.

Team and Department

You will join a small, inclusive Natural Flood Management Team within the Strategy and Adaptation Department of the national Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. The department works with Defra and partners to shape flood resilience and drive innovation. Flexible working is welcomed.

Experience and Qualifications

  • A relevant qualification or experience in FCRM or a related discipline is essential.
  • Experience in Natural Flood Management, commissioning, funding, delivery, and identifying opportunities and barriers to upscaling is desirable.
  • Experience in project and grant management, EA processes and governance (e.g., Scheme of Delegation and assurance), and building/stewarding stakeholder relationships with a range of delivery bodies.
  • Strong communication, digital and data skills (including coding, Power BI, Power Automate) and effective use of tracking and filing systems; familiarity with GIS tools and spatial data analysis.
