Overview
Flood and Coastal Risk Management - Advisor - Natural Flood Management (NFM) is a permanent role to help deliver and upscale NFM across England. You will support the £25 million NFM Programme through project tracking, grant management, and secretariat support, and help mainstream innovative approaches trialled through the programme into the wider FCERM investment portfolio. You will coordinate the NFM Community of Practice and respond to stakeholder enquiries. The role may involve leading specific workstreams (e.g., environmental and hydrological monitoring, permitting, or asset management) with initiative and independence. The role involves hybrid working with some travel and overnight stays. Responding to incidents is a central part of the role, with an incident role, potential additional payment, and training/workplace adjustments provided to support this.
The team sits within the Strategy and Adaptation Department of the national Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. The department collaborates with Defra and partners to shape flood resilience and drive innovation. Flexible working is welcomed.
Responsibilities
- Support the NFM Programme through project tracking, grant management, and secretariat duties.
- Coordinate the NFM Community of Practice; respond to stakeholder enquiries.
- Lead or contribute to specific workstreams (e.g., environmental and hydrological monitoring, permitting, asset management) with initiative and independence.
- Assist in mainstreaming innovative NFM approaches into the wider FCERM investment portfolio.
- Provide incident response and business continuity support as required (may attract additional payment and training/workplace adjustments).
- Travel as required; hybrid working arrangements apply.
- Collaborate with a small, inclusive Natural Flood Management Team and with Defra and other partners to shape strategy and drive innovation.
Qualifications and experience
- A relevant qualification or experience in FCRM or a related discipline is essential.
- Experience in Natural Flood Management – commissioning, funding, delivery, and identifying opportunities and barriers to upscaling.
- Project and grant management experience.
- Understanding of EA processes and governance (e.g., Scheme of Delegation and assurance).
- Ability to build and sustain stakeholder relationships across delivery bodies; strong written and verbal communication.
- Strong digital and data skills, including coding, Power BI, Power Automate; effective use of tracking and filing systems.
- Experience using GIS tools and carrying out spatial data analysis.
