Overview
Flood and Coastal Risk Management – Advisor – Natural Flood Management. This permanent role supports delivering and scaling Nature-Based Solutions for flood resilience. You will help deliver and upscale NFM across England, support the £25 million NFM Programme through project tracking, grant management, and secretariat support, and help mainstream innovative approaches into the wider FCERM investment portfolio. The role may involve hybrid working with some travel and overnight stays. Responding to incidents is a central part of the role; you will be required to have an incident role and may receive additional payment with full training and workplace adjustments available.
You will join a small, inclusive Natural Flood Management Team within the Strategy and Adaptation Department of the national Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. The department collaborates with Defra and partners to shape flood resilience, set strategic direction, and drive innovation. Flexible working is welcomed for all roles.
Responsibilities
- Support the NFM Programme through project tracking, grant management, and secretariat duties.
- Coordinate the NFM Community of Practice and respond to stakeholder inquiries.
- Lead specific workstreams (e.g., environmental and hydrological monitoring, permitting, asset management) with initiative and independence.
- Contribute to mainstreaming innovative NFM approaches into the wider FCERM investment portfolio.
- Provide incident response and business continuity support as part of the role (incidental payment may apply; training and workplace adjustments available).
- Collaborate across teams and with delivery bodies to achieve results; travel and overnight stays as required.
Qualifications and experience
- A relevant qualification or experience in FCRM or a related discipline is essential.
- Experience or strong interest in Natural Flood Management – commissioning, funding, delivery, and scaling opportunities and barriers.
- Experience in project and grant management; EA processes and governance (e.g., Scheme of Delegation and assurance).
- Ability to build and sustain stakeholder relationships and support a wide range of delivery bodies.
- Clear, effective communication; strong digital and data skills (including coding, Power BI, Power Automate) and effective use of tracking and filing systems.
- Experience using GIS tools and performing spatial data analysis.
