GE Aerospace Mechanical Engineering - 12 Month Placement
New Today
Overview
In the 12-month Mechanical Engineering Placement, you'll gain skills and experience across all aspects of mechanical engineering, from requirements through concept to full product design, covering design and analysis. You will define test specifications and support physical tests. Ultimately, products you work on will move into production and gain flight hours.
About GE Aerospace
GE Aerospace advances aviation technologies for today and tomorrow. Your work will contribute to the production of advanced jet engines, components, and integrated systems that power commercial and military aircraft. You will join a team that values drive, curiosity, and diverse ideas and perspectives, contributing to outcomes with impact on millions of lives globally.
Engineering
Engineering is central to our work. We seek talented, innovative engineers to help design and develop products for today, tomorrow, and the future. If you are a dreamer, doer, and inventor who wants your voice heard and ideas to take flight, this is the opportunity for you.
Roles and Responsibilities
In the 12-month Mechanical Engineering Placement, you will gain invaluable skills across engineering from requirements and design analysis to product design and defining test specifications. Depending on the role, you may work across the product development lifecycle, from new product introduction (NPI) to in-service support. We have different roles in this area; a brief snapshot is shown below.
- Materials and Process team at Dowty: focus on material data, planning, and executing material test programs, primarily for composite materials. This includes internal and external testing using physical and virtual methods. You will manage in-house test campaigns, oversee external suppliers and research partners, and develop test procedures and internal capabilities. You will conduct fractography and failure analysis of composite structures to support design and analysis validation.
- Hardware Mechanical Design team in Cheltenham: be part of a project team delivering all aspects of mechanical engineering that support the overall development of Power Distribution and Control Systems solutions. You will influence design decisions, material/process selections, and other aspects related to the design intent and production.
- Mechanical Engineering in Bristol: assist in the design, development, and testing of mechatronic systems and components. Support the integration of electronic control systems with mechanical systems and engage in R&D to explore new technologies and methodologies in mechatronics and beyond.
Guided by structured goals and objectives, you will deliver on inspiring projects with support from your People Leader and team. You will receive coaching and mentoring and have opportunities to connect with other placement students across the UK. This opportunity is offered at Bristol (Bristol Robotic Services), Cheltenham, and Gloucester (Dowty, a GE Aerospace company) sites, and you will be asked to share location preferences during the process.
GE Aerospace, Bristol Robotic Services (BRS) is a small, tight-knit office in Bristol, South West England. We are a team of around 50 professionals who collaborate to solve challenging aerospace problems. The work is rewarding, with opportunities to innovate bespoke solutions in a collaborative environment. Our offices are accessible by Filton Abbey Wood Station and regular bus routes.
We also have a large site in Cheltenham, one of the largest GE Aerospace sites outside the USA, focused on power distribution and avionics systems for the global aviation industry. Our heritage dates to 1940, and our technology is cutting-edge. At GE Aerospace Cheltenham, you will work on major international projects and develop critical aircraft systems for decades to come.
Our aim is to be an employer of choice by offering internships, apprenticeships, mentoring, and staff development programs that enable everyone to reach their potential. Innovation, engineering excellence, and leadership development position GE Aerospace Cheltenham at the forefront of building the future of flight. Dowty, a GE Aerospace company, is based in Gloucestershire and supplies electronically controlled, composite propeller systems for a wide range of applications. Key programs include the Lockheed Martin C-130J, the De-Haviland Dash 8-400, and the Leonardo C-27J. Dowty’s in-house production expertise includes resin transfer moulding and braiding processes developed since 1976.
This placement role is an intended pipeline to our Edison Engineering Development Programme (EEDP) based in Cheltenham. Towards the end of the placement year, we open graduate applications for current placement students with the aim of securing a role before the end of the placement year. This means you can graduate with a job offer in hand upon return to university, pending achieving a 2:1 degree or above.
If you love technology and want a career in engineering, EEDP may be for you. Edison Engineers understand and apply engineering fundamentals in a business environment to design, analyze, and test technology that continues to innovate how the world flies sustainably.
