Overview

Graduate Civil Engineer – Highways and Infrastructure, Belfast (2026 start). Location: Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. Role within AECOM’s Highways, Active Travel and Infrastructure team.

Responsibilities

  • Join a multidisciplinary team and gain hands-on experience on projects from concept through to construction and operation, including design, project management, stakeholder engagement, and contract administration.
  • Contribute to projects at all stages using industry-leading tools and BIM, including exposure to early feasibility studies, detailed design, construction support, and contract administration.
  • Work on a range of projects for funding agencies, national and local governments, highways authorities, and private organisations, with opportunities to contribute across Traffic Engineering and Highways.
  • Assist with transportation economics and planning, feasibility and corridor studies, environmental assessments, highway and streetscape design, traffic management planning, pavement and drainage design, utility relocation, vulnerability and security systems, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

What we’re looking for

  • BEng in Civil Engineering or General Engineering with a 2:1 (or equivalent) or above; an MEng would be an advantage.
  • Highways/Roads modules or experience would be an advantage; ability to demonstrate a good technical understanding of Highways Engineering.
  • Demonstrable interest in Highways Engineering and a desire to pursue a career in this industry.
  • Willing and able to work towards chartership with the CIHT or ICE.
  • Good Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the confidence to engage with clients, colleagues, stakeholders and sub-contractors; ability to explain, explore and discuss technical issues and capture feedback.
  • Enthusiastic, hard-working, with ambition and drive; able to structure and prioritise work in a team environment and also work independently.

Our Graduate Development Programme (GDP) supports professional development with on-the-job technical development, classroom training where required, and exposure to live client projects. We support Chartership with relevant international professional institutions and provide mentorship to guide development.
