We are seeking a Head of Engineering and Design Management to support with the transformation on the UK’s energy landscape. The Power Transmission sector is booming, and Balfour Beatty is leading the charge, delivering major infrastructure projects that will power the future.
As we scale up to meet this demand, we are investing heavily in our people, systems and capabilities; our Design and Engineering function is a cornerstone of this growth. We already employ over 400 highly skilled design and engineering professionals across the UK and India, and we are continuing to expand our global delivery model to support a growing portfolio of complex, high-value projects.

We have a number of design offices across England and Wales, this role can be based from Derby, Newcastle or Leeds.
What you\'ll be doing
- Lead the delivery of design and engineering solutions throughout the project lifecycle, from work winning to project close-out.
- Set and maintain budget and quality targets, ensuring compliance with company processes and customer specifications.
- Champion safety by design, identifying and mitigating risks in both construction and operational phases.
- Make strategic decisions on outsourcing design work, ensuring clear scopes and effective collaboration with partners.
- Ensure teams are skilled, resourced, and motivated to deliver excellence.
- Foster effective stakeholder management and uphold the highest standards of collaboration.
- Monitor design maturity and support estimating processes.
- Drive constructability reviews and encourage engineering innovation and value engineering.
- Support the development and implementation of departmental processes and procedures.
- Maintain a departmental risk register and work with senior leaders to address challenges.
- Promote personal development and growth within the team, maintaining engagement and retention.
Who we\'re looking for
- Significant experience leading projects or teams in a technical environment (experience in Power/Electrical industry is not essential).
- Proven track record working with engineering/design teams in a multi-disciplined environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Familiarity with resource planning, management, mobilisation, business development, and tendering.
- Experience in client and stakeholder management.
- Commitment to health and safety, with a strong understanding of safety by design.
