British Heart Foundation (BHF) has embarked on an extensive transformation of its digital experience to modernise our estate, improve customer experience, and drive additional support and income. As the Head of Software Engineering, you will lead our software engineering function and shape and deliver the multi-year roadmap, overseeing all software development, digital platforms, DevOps and QA across the organisation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the software engineering function and drive the multi-year roadmap across all software development, digital platforms, DevOps and QA.
  • Develop strategies, roadmaps and standards for the use of existing and future platforms; deliver these capabilities to the business.
  • Manage website, intranet and PowerPlatform services; deploy new features and services in collaboration with stakeholders to deliver business value.
  • Provide technical leadership as Chapter Lead for the Software Engineering function, guiding a team of approximately 35 (onshore and offshore) and delivering capability across Technology.
  • Develop and coach the team, set vision and standards, and drive delivery across the organisation.

Working arrangements

This is a hybrid role, with work split between home and one day per week in the London office. Flexibility may be required to optimise performance for the organisation.

About You

  • Degree qualification in technology, computing or related discipline, or equivalent significant industry experience.
  • Excellent technical knowledge of: C#, HTML, CSS, ASP.NET, SQL, MVC, JavaScript, jQuery, XML, SharePoint, MongoDB.
  • Proven experience leading software engineering in a bi-modal delivery environment, with success in managing build/buy/partner strategies and vendor ecosystems.
  • Strong background in secure, scalable, cloud-native architecture and DevOps practices.
  • Strong stakeholder management, with the ability to present to technical and non-technical audiences and a broad range of technologies (web/digital/traditional/integration/UX/backend/full stack).
  • Excellent leadership and recruitment skills, strong communication, and the ability to simplify complex problems for delivery.
  • Strong commercial acumen to assess ROI and TCO of technology decisions; excellent interpersonal skills and ability to influence at all levels, including board and executive leadership.
