About the Business Unit We conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators. Our skills cover the entire project cycle, from business case development to delivery and maintenance, and we contribute to the Global Transport Sector Strategy. Overview of the Role You will lead major highway projects, focusing on Design and Build (D&B) schemes across the UK and sometimes internationally. The role involves client engagement, securing future major projects, managing project teams, and continuously improving project efficiency. Building relationships with contractor partners and shaping the D&B market are key responsibilities. Key Responsibilities and Duties
Develop trusted relationships with contractor partners and their customers, such as National Highways and local authorities. Lead acquisition and delivery of profitable projects in line with strategy. Support Project Directors and Managers through leadership and strong governance. Deliver on budget, programme, and quality in all cases. Create a collaborative contractor‑led culture across supply chain partners. Enhance client satisfaction. Undertake project reviews to foster learning and continuous improvement. Contribute to bid security, delivering customer needs and a viable commercial strategy. Work with Account Leads and Client Directors to capture major bid opportunities in the roads market. Maintain high technical capability, including the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and the Manual of Contract Documents for Highways Works. Coach and mentor early‑career professionals.
Candidate Specification
Seasoned highways professional with a record of delivering major highway projects in a D&B environment, demonstrating strong design and construction skills. Full awareness of Health & Safety legislation and its application in highways design and construction. Experience in project contractual, financial and programme management, and collaborative working across multidisciplinary teams. Excellent communication skills, capable of presenting targets and priorities to staff, clients, and partners. Ability to deliver in demanding D&B environments, resolving complex on‑site issues and managing potential conflicting client needs. Organised, able to meet tight schedules, and mentor staff in professional development. Flexible to travel to client sites or alternative offices as required, possibly for extended periods.
Desirable Qualifications / Experience
Degree in Civil Engineering or related subject. Chartered with a professional institution such as ICE or CIHT (or equivalent). Experience delivering cost‑effective and innovative major highways projects at the level of Project Director, Manager or Design/Technical Lead. Experience overseeing large project teams. Proficiency in road design standards (Design Manual for Roads and Bridges) and specifications (Manual of Contract Documents for Highways Work).
