Responsibilities
- Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. The 22 bed General Hospital in Jamestown covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.
- Offering OTC advice and prescribing for minor ailments, you will work closely with the outpatient triage nurse, managing discharge prescriptions and counselling where necessary.
- Monitor prescriptions and advise clinicians on all aspects of medication; evaluate and keep abreast of new medications and advise on their adoption.
- Clinically screen chemotherapy prescriptions; prepare production worksheets and assist in the aseptic preparation of cytotoxic products in an isolator.
- Utilise the electronic medical record system and maintain and update Patient Group Directions, drug prescribing guidance and the St Helena Formulary.
- Maintain, update and monitor compliance with the St Helena Formulary and other pharmaceutical guidelines in collaboration with clinical colleagues; review regularly through the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee.
- Ensure appropriate stocks of medicines, liaise with overseas suppliers, and optimise stock levels to reduce wastage; perform annual checks on current medical suppliers and explore potential new suppliers for value for money.
- Attend ward rounds and other meetings with clinical staff; input and advise on prescribing behaviours. Supported by three dispensers, a store-keeper and a split-post dispenser/store-keeper.
- On-call duties and Saturday working on a rotational basis.
- Share knowledge and skills beyond the workplace as part of Technical Co-Operation Programme to contribute to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
Qualifications
- Pharmacy degree with registration and good standing with the General Pharmaceutical Council or equivalent.
- Post-registration clinical experience.
- Ability to work on-call and Saturday rotations.
