Overview
Hydrogeologist Officer (Groundwater and Contaminated Land) - 31672. The Environment Agency (EA) Kent, South London and East Sussex Groundwater and Contaminated Land team is looking for a qualified and experienced Hydrogeologist Officer to join their team. The team supports the regulation and management of groundwater resources in Kent and surrounding areas.
Responsibilities
- Responding to planning consultations from local authorities.
- Providing technical advice to customers on sites affected by land contamination.
- Working with the National Permitting Service to determine Environmental Permits and consents.
- Providing groundwater quality specific advice to internal and external customers and stakeholders, especially other teams within the area.
- Supporting the team’s technical specialists in progressing groundwater quality projects.
By performing these duties, you will play a critical role in safeguarding groundwater quality and driving improvements.
Location and Working Arrangements
Office location is ideally Addington; other Kent offices (Tonbridge and Canterbury) are also considered. Hybrid working with a mix of office and home working where appropriate.
Eligibility and Requirements
- Right to work in the UK.
- Verifiable employment history.
- Valid UK driver’s licence.

Team and Environment
The KSLES team covers Kent, South London and East Sussex and works with other teams, external customers and partners through written communication, in person, virtual meetings and site visits. The team values development and supports membership of relevant professional bodies. The role involves occasional travel within Kent and South London, and an incident response capability as part of EA duties.
Experience and Qualifications
- Degree in Hydrogeology, Geological Science, Earth Science, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Experience or awareness of groundwater quality and land contamination issues.
- Ability to solve problems and make risk-based decisions from complex or incomplete information.
- Understanding of environmental legislation and guidance, and the planning regime and regulatory bodies.
- Ability to present technical knowledge clearly to stakeholders and demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Teamwork and IT/data handling skills.
- Membership of a relevant professional body or chartered status is desirable.
