Hydrologist / Water Resource Engineer (Mining)

Overview
WSP has an opportunity for a Hydrologist or Water Resource Engineer to join our UK and Ireland Mine Water team on a full-time, permanent basis in our London office or Naas office (Ireland). The role will focus on working within the team on a range of projects predominantly within the mining business, although there is also the potential to work with other local sectors including infrastructure, manufacturing and land development.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to water resources aspects of mining projects, including environmental assessments, permitting, engineering design, ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) considerations, and water stewardship in the industry.
- Conduct climate, hydrological, and hydraulic assessments; develop water management plans; perform water balance modelling; conduct climate change modelling; and design water management infrastructure.
- Conduct dam break analyses and consequence classification assessments.
- Prepare technical documents for senior review.
- Support non-mining projects in the UK and Ireland, including Flood Risk Assessments and SuDS design.
- Travel for project-based site work as needed.
- Assist in client relationship development and business development.
- Collaborate with colleagues and support senior staff to meet project goals.
- Support the development and maintenance of client relationships, either through project-based client interaction or supporting business development efforts of senior staff.
- Work in a collaborative manner with colleagues from other disciplines within WSP as required;
- Work in a collaborative way, taking direction from and supporting more senior staff to achieve project goals and meet deadlines; and
- Display a safety-first attitude in line with an interdependent health and safety culture, promoting positive health and safety, raising safety issues through the appropriate channels and adhering to WSP’s health and safety policy and procedures.
What We Will Be Looking For You To Demonstrate
- BSc degree (or equivalent) in Water Resource Engineering or Civil Engineering (with hydrology and hydraulics modules); or BSc in Geography or Environmental Sciences (with hydrology module). MSc in hydrology and/or including hydraulic design would be advantageous
- Strong technical and report writing skills
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written (in English)
- Ability to work in an open and collaborative manner as part of a team
- Good organisational ability and time management skills
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook)
- Flexibility, willingness and ability to travel both locally and internationally
Desirable Skills
- Previous, demonstrable experience conducting hydrologic and hydraulic assessments and/or design of water management infrastructure
- Past experience working on mining sector projects
- Experience in consulting or engineering
- Competency with GIS and CAD systems
- Competency in a programming language (e.g. Python, R, C)
- Competency with hydrologic and hydraulic modelling software (e.g., HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, PC SWMM)
- Competency with GoldSim Monte Carlo Simulation software
- Membership of a relevant professional organisation
- Additional language skills
- Ability to travel to and from sites across the UK
- Experience of international travel
