Job Description

We are looking for experienced environmental professionals to join our teams that regulate waste and industrial installations across the East Anglian Region. As a regulatory officer you will be at the forefront of protecting people and the environment from harm and securing environmental improvements. This is particularly important to deliver our aim to drive forward our climate ambitions and support green growth and net zero.

Responsibilities

  • undertake compliance assessment activities at a range of sites in sectors including food and drink, landfill, waste incineration, chemicals, combustion.
  • ensure permit compliance and make complex assessments of an operators\' ability to protect the environment, prevent pollution and optimise use of resources. At times you will set conditions under which a site may continue to operate and enforce these.
  • use your influencing and negotiating skills to secure best practice, often dealing with people at senior levels within industry and local communities.
  • respond to and investigate incidents across our portfolio of sites, making sure preventive and protective action is implemented.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

Team and Location

The Installations teams sit within Area Environment Management department in Local Operations. The post will be in one of our teams based in Norwich, Colchester, Ely or Ipswich. The team works flexibly, delivering regulation at a variety of industrial and complex waste processes in the rural and urban areas of East England. To achieve our aims, it is important that we work closely with local and national teams, companies, communities, and partner organisations.

Experience/skills Required

Essential: You\'ll be a proactive, self-motivated and confident communicator, used to influencing and negotiating to deliver outcomes, with strong interpersonal skills; together with well-developed technical expertise and regulatory experience within an industrial environment. A full UK Driving Licence is required.

Preferably:

  • Have significant regulatory and/or industrial experience across a range of industries
  • Be familiar with environmental management systems, auditing and root cause analysis
  • Be able to interpret environmental monitoring and performance data
  • Be used to managing multiple demands and delivering outcomes independently
  • Take initiative and practice a continuous improvement approach
  • Have a degree/equivalent in a scientific, environmental or engineering discipline

It would be helpful, but not essential, if you had membership of a relevant professional organisation such as IEMA or CIWM.
