The CODE Technology Infrastructure team supports a broad portfolio of change initiatives to sustain and transform FIS’s legacy technologies and deliver new solutions. This role sits within CODE Technology and supports the wider Capability, Development, Infrastructure & Innovation (CDII) team, contributing to HM Government’s fight against serious and organised crime.

The Infrastructure Operations Engineer role offers a dynamic, technically focused environment where you will ensure robust, reliable, high-performance systems and services that meet business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Hands-on administration, maintenance, and monitoring of diverse IT systems including servers, storage, endpoint management, networks, telephony, and business applications.
  • Provide third-line (advanced) support and project delivery across a wide spectrum of IT systems in collaboration with fellow engineers.
  • Engage with other IT teams and departments to achieve shared objectives and support the delivery of infrastructure services.
  • Support datacentre management activities, including capacity and availability management.
  • Install, manage, and maintain end user devices in a Windows environment.
  • Contribute to asset lifecycle management, including inventory, compliance, disposal, and documentation of the asset portfolio.
  • Assist in delivering non-functional requirements and continual service improvement for projects.
  • Familiarity with installed hardware, software, and procedures in the IT Infrastructure area; strong communication with verbal updates and written documentation.
  • Potentially conduct technical workshops to assess business requirements and support changes to existing services; identify requirements and quantify benefits.
  • Travel within the UK for meetings and infrastructure work; occasional overnight stays; on-call rota outside of standard hours, including weekends.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A UK national.
  • Hold SC clearance or be willing to be SC cleared to take up duty and be prepared to attain DV clearance.
  • Must be prepared to obtain Developed Vetting (DV) clearance once in post and hold/obtain Security Check (SC) clearance prior to starting.
  • Infrastructure background with technical understanding of infrastructure (virtual machines, datacentres and environments).
  • Ability to work in an IT Technical role within the CODE Technology Infrastructure team.

Desirable Criteria

  • A Full UK Driving Licence.
  • ITIL 3 or ITIL 4 Foundation.
  • CompTIA Security+ and CompTIA A+.
  • Experience working toward cyber security standards.

Technical and Professional Skills

  • Understanding of Service Management and Operations, including Request Fulfilment, Incident/Problem/Change Management.
  • Experience with CISCO ISE GUI administration.
  • Experience with planning, installation, maintenance, and improvement of enterprise hardware and data centre management including environmental monitoring.
  • Experience installing, managing, and supporting delivery of physical desktops in a Windows environment.
  • Lifecycle management of hardware assets, including inventory, compliance, disposal and protection; maintain documentation.
  • Experience with switching concepts using Cisco switches.
  • Knowledge of Government-grade cryptography devices and the Government Security Classification system.
  • Strong problem-solving, documentation, and information-sharing skills; ability to coach junior colleagues.

Salary, Benefits and Working Arrangements

Salary: £36,320 with HMRC contributing £10,521 towards the Civil Service Pension scheme. Flexible and Hybrid working policies are supported where possible. Benefits include a generous leave allowance (25 days rising to 30), pension contributions, family-friendly policies, personal support, and development opportunities. This post attracts a Level 2 Flexibility Payment. On-call duties and periods of additional hours, including weekends and bank holidays, are required.
