Overview
Intelligence Research Officer – National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU), Environment Agency. The Environment Agency aims to be an intelligence-led organisation and seeks to manage threat, risk and harm professionally in line with current guidance. Environmental crime is a strategic priority with high-profile attention from the public, media and stakeholders. This role supports investigations, helps prioritise and drive interventions to remove unlawful operators from waste regimes, and delivers intelligence products to inform decision making.

An incident role is a central part of the role; you must be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. Additional payment and full training may be provided, with alternative working arrangements available to support you in this role.
Location is flexible with a mix of home and office working; travel to Birmingham and Sheffield offices may be required occasionally. Interviews are expected to be held via Microsoft Teams in September 2025.
Responsibilities
- Proactively develop and access intelligence from a range of sources to inform decision making.
- Produce actionable intelligence products for customers and support investigations.
- Respond to incidents as part of the team and contribute to business continuity during incidents.
- Support the Environment Agency’s enforcement community across multiple regions with intelligence and assessments.
- Represent the Environment Agency professionally with partners and stakeholders.
- Provide timely and accurate information by interrogating IT systems and databases and preparing research summaries.
Qualifications and Skills
- Experience collecting and evaluating data from diverse sources to produce or inform intelligence products; ability to interrogate IT systems and databases. An enthusiasm and curiosity for finding information is essential.
- Good communication skills with the ability to listen to others and transmit information effectively.
- Ability to work with professionals from a variety of partners and represent the Environment Agency professionally.
- Ability to use standard IT packages and retrieve information accurately; strong information management capabilities.
- Strong team-working skills and an inclusive approach; ability to switch between tasks and manage administrative activities to support colleagues and customers.
Security and Eligibility
- Security vetting checks (SC and NPPV3) will be required.
- Note on Civil Service status: Environment Agency is not part of HM Civil Service; eligibility for continuous service may differ. If unsure, consult your HR team.
