Overview

We are seeking an Intelligence Research Officer to join the National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU). The Environment Agency aims to be an intelligence-led organisation, and this role supports investigations by pro-actively developing and accessing intelligence from a range of sources to inform decision making and generate actionable intelligence products for customers. The role involves responding to incidents as part of business continuity and incident coordination, with the opportunity for flexible working patterns including job sharing.

Responsibilities

  • Pro-actively develop and access intelligence from a range of sources to inform decisions and produce actionable intelligence products.
  • Support investigations and help prioritise and drive interventions to remove unlawful operators from waste regimes.
  • Respond to incidents as a central part of the role; be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support. This may attract additional payment and training, with alternative working arrangements available to support the incident role.
  • Represent the Environment Agency professionally with partners and stakeholders.
  • Communicate findings clearly, using standard IT tools to retrieve, analyse and present information.
  • Work within the Environment Agency’s enforcement community across multiple geographic areas, contributing to safeguarding environmental outcomes.

Experience/Skills / Qualifications

  • Experience collecting and evaluating data from a wide variety of sources to inform intelligence products; ability to interrogate IT systems and databases; a curiosity for finding information is essential.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to listen and transmit information effectively.
  • Ability to work with initiative and adapt approach as needed; strong teamwork and inclusive collaboration.
  • Proficiency with standard IT packages and the ability to retrieve information accurately.

Requirements and Additional Information

  • Location is flexible with a mix of home and office working; occasional travel to Birmingham and Sheffield offices may be required.
  • Interviews via Microsoft Teams are expected in September 2025.
  • Security vetting checks (SC and NPPV3) will be required.
  • Note on civil service status: Environment Agency is not part of HM Civil Service; continuous service eligibility varies by prior service and should be checked with your HR team.
