Overview

We are seeking an Intelligence Research Officer to join the National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU). The Environment Agency aims to be an intelligence-led organisation, with the ability to manage intelligence professionally in line with current guidance to ensure threat, risk and harm are appropriately assessed and managed. Environmental crime is a strategic priority, attracting high profile attention from the public, media, national and international stakeholders. This role supports investigations and helps prioritise and drive interventions to remove unlawful operators from the waste regimes. You will help deliver our response by proactively developing and accessing intelligence from a range of sources to inform decision making and provide actionable intelligence products for our customers.

Responsibilities

• Proactively develop and access intelligence from a range of sources to inform decision making.
• Produce actionable intelligence products for customers and support investigations.
• Respond to incidents as part of an incident role and be available for business continuity support during incidents (this may attract additional payment and full training; alternative working arrangements available).
• Represent the Environment Agency professionally with a variety of partners.
• Flex between tasks and juggle administrative activities to support colleagues and customers.
• Demonstrate enthusiasm and curiosity for finding information and interrogating IT systems and databases.

Experience / Qualifications

• Ability to collect and evaluate data from a wide variety of sources to produce or inform intelligence products.
• Experience interrogating IT systems and databases; strong information retrieval skills.
• Good communication skills and the ability to listen and transmit information effectively.
• Ability to work with a dispersed team and represent the Environment Agency professionally with partners.
• Strong initiative to adapt approaches as needed and strong teamwork in a supportive, inclusive environment.
• Proficiency with standard IT packages and accurate information retrieval.

Additional Information

You will be comfortable working in a dispersed team. Location is flexible with a mix of home and office working; travel to Birmingham and Sheffield offices may be required on occasion. Interviews will be conducted via Microsoft Teams and are expected to be in September 2025.
