Overview

Intelligence Research Officer for the National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU) in the Environment Agency. The Environment Agency aims to be an intelligence-led organisation and this role supports investigations and prioritises interventions to remove unlawful operators from waste regimes.

You will develop and access intelligence from a range of sources to inform decision making and provide actionable intelligence products for our customers. The role requires incident response experience and the ability to support business continuity during incidents.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively develop and access intelligence from diverse sources.
  • Produce actionable intelligence products and inform decision making for customers.
  • Support investigations and help prioritise interventions to remove unlawful operators from the waste regimes.
  • Respond to incidents as part of the role, with availability for incident response or business continuity support. This may include an additional payment and full training; alternative working arrangements will be provided.
  • Collaborate with the Intelligence & Partnerships department, providing intelligence products and assessments to colleagues.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience collecting and evaluating data from a wide variety of sources to produce or inform intelligence products.
  • Experience interrogating IT systems and databases; ability to prepare and deliver research summaries; enthusiasm and curiosity for finding information.
  • Good communication skills; ability to listen, transmit information effectively, and represent the Environment Agency professionally with partners.
  • Ability to use standard IT packages; ability to retrieve information accurately; good teamwork and an inclusive approach; ability to juggle administrative tasks to support colleagues and customers.
  • Flexibility to transition between tasks as needed.

Additional Information

  • Location is flexible with a mix of home and office working; travel to Birmingham and Sheffield offices may be required on occasions.
  • Interviews will be conducted via Microsoft Teams and are expected to be in September 2025.
  • Security vetting checks (SC and NPPV3) will be required.
