Overview
We are seeking an Intelligence Research Officer to join the National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU). The Environment Agency aims to be an intelligence-led organisation; the role involves managing intelligence professionally, informing decisions, and producing actionable intelligence for customers. Environmental crime is a strategic priority, with investigations to remove unlawful operators from waste regimes. The role supports investigations and helps prioritise interventions. Location is flexible with a mix of home and office working; travel to Birmingham and Sheffield offices will be required on occasions. Interviews will be held via Microsoft Teams in September 2025.
Responsibilities
- Pro-actively develop and access intelligence from a range of sources to inform decision making.
- Produce and provide actionable intelligence products for customers and colleagues.
- Respond to incidents as part of duties, with the possibility of an incident role requiring training and additional arrangements.
- Support the Environment Agency’s enforcement community across 14 geographical areas and national services.
- Contribute to investigations and help prioritise interventions to remove unlawful operators from the waste regimes.
- Communicate effectively with partners and stakeholders, representing the Environment Agency professionally.
- Balance multiple tasks and administrative activities to support colleagues and customers.
Experience/Skills / Qualifications
- Experience collecting and evaluating data from a wide variety of sources to inform intelligence products; able to interrogate IT systems and databases. Enthusiasm and curiosity for finding information are essential.
- Good communication skills; able to listen and transmit information effectively.
- Ability to use standard IT packages and retrieve information accurately.
- Ability to work with initiative and adapt approach as needed; strong teamworking and an inclusive approach.
- Comfort working in a dispersed team; flexible working patterns including job share are welcome.
- Desirable: experience delivering research summaries and intelligence products for decision-making.
Other Requirements / Conditions
- Security vetting checks (SC and NPPV3) will be required.
