Overview

Intelligence Research Officer required for the National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU) to support investigations, prioritise and drive interventions to remove unlawful operators from waste regimes. The Environment Agency aims to be an intelligence-led organisation, with threat, risk and harm assessed and managed accordingly. This role is part of the Environmental Crime priority programme with engagement across enforcement and national services.

Responding to incidents is a central part of our work; you will be required to have an incident role and be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support. This may attract additional payment and full training with alternative working arrangements provided for the incident role. Future recruitment will be from the reserve list.

Location is flexible with a mix of home and office working; travel to our Birmingham and Sheffield offices may be required on occasions. Interviews will be held via Microsoft Teams in September 2025. Responsibilities

  • Proactively develop and access intelligence from a range of sources to inform decision making.
  • Produce actionable intelligence products for customers and support investigations.
  • Respond to incidents as part of a dispersed team and provide business continuity support where needed.
  • Collaborate with intelligence professionals within the Environment Agency’s Intelligence & Partnerships department.

Qualifications / Experience

  • Experience collecting and evaluating data from diverse sources to produce or inform intelligence products; ability to interrogate IT systems and databases.
  • Enthusiasm and curiosity for finding information.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to listen, transmit information effectively and represent the Environment Agency professionally with partners.
  • Ability to use standard IT packages and retrieve information accurately.
  • Strong team working skills and an inclusive, supportive approach; ability to juggle multiple administrative tasks and switch between priorities.

Requirements

  • Security vetting: SC and NPPV3 are required.
