Interaction Designer – Home Office Digital (SEO) Location: Croydon CR0 2WF, Manchester M5 3LZ, Sheffield S3 8NU. Job Summary We are looking for an Interaction Designer to work across policing and public protection services, helping design systems that keep communities safe and support frontline officers. The Home Office Digital designs, builds, and develops innovative digital services that are critical to the UK's security and prosperity. We support millions of visa applications, border crossings, passport applications, and police checks each year. As part of the Policing and Public Protection Technology portfolio, you will join the central user‑centred design team. Working centrally rather than being embedded in a single programme means you will have exposure to a diverse range of products and services across biometrics, offender management, national security, modern slavery and more. This varied portfolio offers the opportunity to tackle different design challenges, work with multiple stakeholder groups, and see how technology supports and protects people across the UK. Key Responsibilities
Design the flow of user interactions across services and products, ensuring correct use of Government and Home Office design systems, and iterate prototypes for user testing. Collaborate closely with user researchers, content designers and service designers to create designs, challenge assumptions, and build accessible solutions based on user needs. Create prototypes, concepts and visualise design problems. Map user journeys and processes. Advocate for user needs to design simple, effective and accessible services. Run workshops, participate in research activities and communicate design decisions. Advance best practice and standards for consistent service design across government and the Home Office. Champion user‑centred design within the Home Office Design community and across government. Take responsibility for your own learning and development.
Person Specification
UK residency: You need to have lived in the UK for the past 5 years. Evidence‑based design: understanding user needs, participating in research activities and interpreting user research to inform design. Prototyping and concept creation: sketching, concept creation and designing prototypes at different levels of fidelity. Interaction design: visual and interaction design to create usable, accessible and responsive user interfaces. Accessibility and inclusion: applying accessibility standards and understanding technology constraints. Collaboration: running workshops, facilitating discussions and design collaboration. Communicating, persuading and advocating: clearly articulating to stakeholders the benefits of a user‑centred approach, based on evidence.
