Buckingham Futuresare delighted to be supporting our Local Authority client in Essex with the recruitment of a temporary Environmental Protection Manager.

This role offers remote and flexible working, alongside working from council offices, depending on business needs.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Environmental Protection Manager to join a busy, multi-skilled service for an initial 3-month period. The successful candidate will provide clear direction and effective leadership, set service priorities, monitor work allocation, and improve overall performance. You’ll also provide technical advice and make decisions across all aspects of the role, including taking formal action where necessary.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead a team of Environmental Health Officers, Technical Officers, and Administration Officers, overseeing service priorities, work allocation, and performance reporting.

• Provide day-to-day operational management of direct reports in line with HR policies and processes.

• Deliver customer-focused specialist advice and services, ensuring professional standards that meet customer needs.

• Act as the single point of contact for environmental protection-related queries and complaints.

• Support, guide, and advise the environmental protection team on complex cases.

• Collaborate with colleagues across the organisation and maintain effective working relationships with elected members, partners, and stakeholders.

• Demonstrate a deep understanding of Environmental Health Services, enabling the resolution of complex cases, applications, and inspections, and providing resilience and flexibility within the team.

• Promote effective two-way communication and ensure important management updates are shared.

• Encourage peer recognition, praise, and feedback within the team.

Experience and Skills Required

• Ideally registered with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

• Significant Environmental Health experience with at least 2+ years of line management.
