• Compensation: $70,000 - $80,000 annually, commensurate with experience

GreenUP is a registered environmental charity that offers programs and services to those living and working in the Peterborough region. Our programs focus on facilitating positive action and providing the tools to make changes that can create a large and lasting impact on our environment. As an active community organization, we partner with individuals, businesses, other non-profit organizations, and governments to ensure that our region maintains its longstanding track record of environmental leadership in Ontario and across Canada.

Position Background

The Interim Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of GreenUP according to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors. The Interim Executive Director is a team-oriented, innovative, inclusive, and collaborative leader who engages and inspires all stakeholders: staff, board members, partners, funders, donors volunteers, and the community at large. Building upon an outstanding legacy of environmental programming, they sustain and expand our work, and position GreenUP to meet the critical challenges and opportunities of the climate crisis.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

1. Program and Grant Development & Oversight (25%)

• Secure funding for the operation of the organization, including the continuation of current programs and the development of new activities and services in collaboration with senior staff
• Develop grant proposals, service agreements, and other funding applications to support GreenUP’s programs, with the support of Director of Programs
• Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the organization's programs and services
• Ensure that the programs and services offered by the organization reflect the priorities identified in the strategic plan and contribute to the organization's mission
• Provide key oversight and management support to staff and contractors to ensure ongoing success for all of GreenUP’s programs and activities

2. Financial Sustainability & Management (20%)

• Lead donor relations and implement annual fundraising activities, including spring and fall campaigns with the support of the Communications Specialist
• Develop and manage contractual services, social enterprise, and fee-for-service opportunities to diversify our funding streams and maintain a sustainable operational model
• Lead senior staff and the Board Finance Committee in budget preparations, the annual financial audit, and required corporate reporting, while working with the bookkeeper to maintain daily financial processes and complete ongoing financial reviews
• Implement policy and procedures for financial management, contract administration, capital management, financial monitoring, and records management

3. Human Resources (15%)

• In conjunction with Program Directors, the HR Committee, and the Board, oversee the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures, and practices, including appropriate training for all staff and contractors
• Facilitate organizational processes to enhance effective communication, maintain a strong culture of employee engagement, and support effective respectful working relationships among staff
• Establish a positive, healthy, and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation
• Promote an inclusive working environment where equity and diversity are centred
• Maintain staffing requirements for successful program delivery and lead the performance management process, including annual performance reviews
• Coach and mentor staff as appropriate
• Take corrective action in accordance with GreenUP’s established policies and all applicable legal requirements
• Act as an effective communications conduit between staff and the Board of Directors

4. Strategy and Governance (15%)

• Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the organization’s programs and services in accordance with the strategic plan and work with the Board and staff on progress reporting in alignment with the plan
• Identify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the organization in monthly board reports
• Report to, and support, the Board of Directors and committees
• Prepare a monthly board package, consult and collaborate with the Board and Committee Chairs to prepare for Board and Committee meetings
• Provide support to the Board on governance policy issues and initiate approved recommendations

5. Partner and Donor Relations & Communications (10%)

• Maintain existing, partnerships by establishing good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, municipalities, government agencies, local businesses, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization
• Maintain strong relationships with GreenUP’s donors, including personal outreach and communication with our major donors
• Work with the Communications Specialist to develop and implement our annual fundraising activities and campaigns and provide support in implementing communications strategies
• Enhance the organization’s community profile by representing the organization at community events

6. Leadership and Advocacy (10%)

• Work with multiple levels of government and Indigenous leaders to further GreenUP’s work
• Act as a spokesperson for the organization and enhance the organization’s community profile by representing the organization at community events
• Ensure compliance to minimum standards in accordance with government legislation, regulations, and guidelines pertinent to the organization’s role as an employer and nonprofit agency
• Take direction from the Board of Directors on issues with significant liability and/or impact on the organization

Requirements

• Five or more years of experience in a senior leadership position, managing finances, staff and programs, preferably within the Canadian environmental sector
• A post-secondary degree focused on the environment, non-profit management or related field
• A collaborative working style, strong interpersonal skills, and enthusiasm for community-based programs
• Proven multi-year track record of revenue development success
• Knowledge of the requirements of federal and provincial legislation applicable to Canadian charities

• Organization and Planning Skills: sets goals with deadlines and priorities, creates and implements action plans, monitors progress towards goals, and evaluates progress and results

Working Conditions:

• The Interim Executive Director works primarily at the GreenUP office in Peterborough, and occasionally visits the Ecology Park and other locations in Peterborough and surrounding area. Hybrid work arrangements are available requiring a minimum of 3-days per week on-site.
• Work hours are Monday to Friday during regular office hours, and occasionally on evenings and weekends, representing GreenUP at community meetings, workshops, and other public events outside of regular office hours
