Manulife General Account Investment (UK) is Manulife’s primary European office which sources private and public fixed income transactions across local markets. This office collaborates with Manulife’s other corporate finance offices in Boston, Toronto and Asia (Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo) to assess and analyze transactions and advise portfolio managers across various geographies. Increasing Manulife’s exposure to the European fixed income markets is an important part of the ongoing strategy.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of European Corporate Finance and working closely with senior members of the team, the successful candidate will function as a fixed income investment professional, assisting in the screening and identification of new investment opportunities and working towards the preparation and presentation of these opportunities and their merits to the broader investment team across geographies. They will be responsible for the ongoing and periodic review of individual investments in the portfolio.

New Investment Opportunities:

Investment Analyst (“IA”) is expected to apply credit and transaction analysis and, through their understanding of Manulife's credit approach and process, work closely with senior members of the team to screen European private and public transactions in terms of credit, relative value and portfolio needs. IA is expected to become knowledgeable about the various markets in Europe, as well as North America and Asia Pacific, across all the fixed income asset classes where Manulife is active. Public transactions will require daily interaction with wide ranging UK and European public bond bookrunners as well as multiple internal stakeholders. Private transactions will include privately placed EMTNs as well as USPPs, European private placements, schuldscheins, and project financings. Applying that knowledge the IA will work towards advising members of the broader group across Manulife offices on the merits of investment opportunities.

IA will assist senior members of the European Corporate Finance team in business development activities (ie. sourcing new opportunities) with the goal of expanding Manulife's European coverage. IA will assist in researching and developing investment strategies and parameters and regularly present targeted companies with financing needs commensurate with Manulife’s cash flow, credit quality and duration needs. That will require proactivity and the ability to think creatively. Gaining an understanding of various Manulife entities' tax and regulatory considerations and implementation of those considerations is also important.

IA will work closely with sector analysts in the Boston, Toronto and Asia offices on credit and transaction analysis. IA is expected to work towards gaining responsibilities for European sectors and credits. IA will be part of the team that advises portfolio management in Boston, Toronto and Asia on credit and transactions on ongoing basis. Communication skills (both verbal and written) and collaboration are very important as there will be constant communication with analysts, PMs, tax and legal from various geographies.

Investment Administration:

Manage a portfolio including diversity, duration, capacity and credit risk and monitor and disseminate sector and company developments on a timely basis. Specific responsibilities will also include the following:

  • Monitor and gain a deep understanding of the composition of the portfolio;
  • Monitor portfolio developments impacting credit risk and communicate them in a timely manner to relevant constituents including members of team, credit analysts, credit, portfolio management and trading as appropriate;
  • Assess corporate actions including tenders or other changes to the terms or conditions of investment;
  • Ongoing identification of public and private credits that present interesting investment opportunities for Manulife.

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in developing and understanding fixed income investing and credit analytical skills;
  • Undergraduate degree with exceptional GPA and high level of academic achievement;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills;
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects at once;
  • Project management skills with the ability to collaborate well; this includes contacting and following up with key constituent parties (legal, accounting, portfolio) to move joint work forward;
  • Proactive approach to work in what is a small but growing team;
  • Very strong desire to learn and succeed and grow a business;
  • Pursuit of an MBA or the equivalent and/or the CFA designation is preferred.
