What is Publishing Development - and why does it matter?

Publishing Development is the department at Frontiers you’ll be joining as a Journal Specialist. It plays a central role in shaping the future of scientific publishing. Our team works closely with editors and researchers to build strong journal communities, launch impactful article collections (Note: remove italic formatting), and ensure each specialty section reaches its full potential. It’s not just about publishing - it’s about driving progress, fostering collaboration, and supporting our mission of open, accessible science.

What You’ll Do

As a Journal Specialist, you’ll be at the center of our publishing strategy - connecting researchers, building communities, and powering scientific progress.

  • Own the journey: From initial outreach to publication, lead the full lifecycle of Research Topics.
  • Commission with impact: Build and manage a dynamic sales pipeline - from editor engagement to high-quality submissions.
  • Build trust: Cultivate strong relationships with editors and researchers to attract top-tier contributions.
  • Be the face of the journal: Represent Frontiers at conferences, workshops, and webinars to grow visibility and spark collaboration.
  • Grow the editorial board: Recruit new experts and strengthen journal sections with fresh perspectives.
  • Drive development: Manage journal and section growth through strategic, data-informed initiatives.
  • Champion the author experience: Gather feedback and push for process improvements that matter.

About You

  • You’ve got sales or business development experience and a results-driven mindset.
  • You thrive in fast-paced environments and handle high volumes of work with confidence.
  • You’re a natural communicator - personable, persuasive, and great at building relationships.
  • You’re entrepreneurial - you spot opportunities and act on them.
  • You’re tech-savvy, AI-literate, or eager to learn.
  • You’re fluent in English (spoken and written).
  • You’re passionate about Open Science and want to make a real impact.
