There has never been a more exciting time to join the paediatric workforce in the Emergency Department (ED) at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed registered nurse to join our expanding team as a Sister/Charge Nurse.
UHS is a large teaching hospital and the regional children’s major trauma centre. The purpose‑built service is a standalone department that offers an 11‑trolley acute illness and injury service, a safe room, eight‑beded children short stay, children’s X‑ray, and a treatment/procedural room.

Responsibilities
- Act as a role model to nursing staff, encouraging effective working relationships and the development of a cohesive nursing team, working with a common philosophy.
- Supervise the professional work of nursing staff and exercise good leadership skills.
- Maintain competence and knowledge within your area of specialism, initiating changes that benefit the standard of care to patients and encouraging staff to do the same.
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care, ensuring any changes are communicated to the relevant parties.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
Essential Criteria
- Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma).
- Registered nurse on the appropriate part of the register.
- Significant post‑registration experience, including experience and knowledge within the relevant speciality.
- Ward management/management of areas in ED experience.
- Knowledge of current issues within the acute health service and experience in an acute hospital setting.
- Provide evidence of supporting/managing a range of learners in practice.
- Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice.
- Ability to demonstrate clinical decision‑making and judgement.
- Commitment to the post and Care Group responsibilities.
- Commitment to continuing professional development.
- Able to clinically prioritise patients using the Manchester Triage System.
- Have completed Immediate Life Support and Paediatric Life Support courses as a minimum.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in handling adverse events and complaints.
- Appraisal skills.
- Act in the role of Practice Assessor or support learning progression/ challenges as needed.
- Some insight into budget management.

Person Specification
We are seeking to employ a Band 6 children’s nurse with urgent care experience. The service has a friendly and dynamic team and works in a fast‑paced environment. If you are a motivated, passionate, committed, and enthusiastic team player keen to join the senior nursing team, this is a role for you. Children's Emergency Department is a 24‑hour service, a degree of flexibility will be required to meet service requirements.
