Position Summary

The Land Mobile Radio (LMR) Technician is responsible for maintaining and repairing LMR user radios and ancillary equipment. This role involves performing both preventive and corrective maintenance to ensure optimal functionality of communication systems. The technician will manage the removal, reinstallation, and shipping of mobile radios to the designated depot, ensuring all repairs meet manufacturer specifications within a five-business-day turnaround.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain P25-compliant LMR systems, including base stations, repeaters, antennas, duplexers, and associated RF equipment.
  • Configure networked P25 systems including trunked and conventional architectures, simulcast systems, and IP-based cores.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on LMR user radios and ancillary equipment to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Manage the removal, reinstallation, and shipping of mobile radios to the designated depot for maintenance.
  • Utilize factory tools for depot-level maintenance and ensure all repairs meet manufacturer specifications within a five-business-day turnaround.
  • Set up, maintain, and optimize subscriber radios to enhance performance, reliability, and operation.
  • Conduct RF coverage testing, signal strength measurements, and site surveys to ensure reliable communication in operational areas.
  • Assist engineers in tuning RF components for optimal system performance (e.g., antenna alignment, duplexer tuning).
  • Monitor and log system performance metrics; recommend and implement improvements to enhance system coverage and reliability.
  • Oversee secure equipment shipments to ensure safe and timely delivery.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and equipment status.

Qualifications

  • Experience in maintaining and repairing LMR user radios and ancillary equipment.
  • Proficiency in using factory tools for depot-level maintenance.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturer specifications and repair standards.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage equipment removal, reinstallation, and shipping processes.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and ensure repairs are completed within a five-business-day turnaround.
  • Proficiency with Motorola ASTRO 25 systems (core, repeaters, consoles, RF sites, subscriber units) and associated software (e.g., Radio Management, CPS, Provisioning Manager).
  • Experience performing RF testing and diagnostics using equipment such as service monitors, spectrum analyzers, and time domain reflectometers (TDRs).
  • Familiarity with IP networking protocols and system integration for IP-based communications systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of encryption key management, including AES/FIPS 140-2 standards, OTAR, and KMF operations.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance in accordance with agency requirements.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in optimizing subscriber radios for enhanced performance.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Certain states and localities require employers to post a reasonable estimate of salary range. A reasonable estimate of the current base pay range for this position is $130,000.00 to $140,000.00 annually. Actual salary will be based on a variety of factors, including shift, location, experience, skill set, performance, licensure and certification, and business needs. The range for this position in other geographic locations may differ. Certain positions may also be eligible for variable incentive compensation, such as bonuses or commissions, that is not included in the base pay.
