Overview
The role sits in the Technology RTGS Operations - CNI Platforms domain and is based in Leeds with a hybrid working model. The Lead Platform Engineer will be responsible for delivering platform services that support the RTGS system, working with Architects, Security, and cross-functional engineering teams. The role may require covering out-of-hours activities for live services.
A Day in the Role
- Participate in the team stand-up for the current sprint and discuss workload and blockers.
- Attend major incident management meetings as the senior on-call engineer, investigating root causes and coordinating resolutions.
- Develop and implement changes through the Bank’s formal processes; draft and raise change requests and participate in audits representing technology.
- Collaborate with architects, security experts, and other engineering teams; share knowledge through lead-learning sessions.
- Balance work on new features with maintenance of existing services and toolchains; support tickets requiring knowledge across multiple technology stacks.
- Contribute to out-of-hours activities such as upgrades and releases when on rota; otherwise dedicate time to feature improvements.
Role Requirements
- Dedicated DevOps engineer within an Agile environment with a collaborative approach and willingness to share knowledge.
- Understanding that the CNI Platform and RTGS are critical to UK Payments Systems, with flexibility to work outside core hours when required.
- Apply best practices in Continuous Improvement/Development to manage environments and promote code safely from pre-production to live across various stacks.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure deployment processes are understood and tools are accessible; align teams toward common goals.
- Develop and maintain technology roadmaps and refresh change sequences for the estate.
Skills and Experience
Minimum/Essential Criteria
- Experience building effective working relationships, with the ability to challenge appropriately.
- Self-starter with initiative to upskill in new technologies and attention to detail.
- Ability to research and develop solutions to modernise or improve services, automate IT operations, reduce costs, or increase service levels.
- Practical expertise in complex problem solving; experience supporting production services 24/7.
Capabilities
- Tooling: Jenkins, Git, Jira/Confluence, Ansible
- IaC: Ansible, Terraform, Packer
- Containers: Docker, Podman
- Monitoring: Splunk, ELK
- Automated build/deploy, test-driven development, CI/CD, release management
- DevOps lifecycle experience from design through operations
- Security basics: PKI, secrets management, access controls
- Virtualisation: VMware vSphere/ESXi
- Networking basics: DNS, load balancers, proxies, ports and protocols
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software or Electronic Engineering or related discipline
Desirable Criteria
- Security best practices and technologies (PKI, secrets management, access controls)
- Workload automation (e.g., BMC Control-M, IBM TWS)
- Virtualisation (VMware vSphere/ESXi) and basic networking
- Discipline in lines of responsibility and related technologies
Salary, Benefits and Requirements
You will support critical Bank services and may need to work evenings and weekends for live systems; payments for this time are in addition to base salary.
Salary and Location
Location: Leeds. Salary range: £72,320 – £81,360 plus comprehensive benefits.
