Overview

Lead Test Engineer - HO - G7 at Manchester Digital. Location options include Croydon CR0 2WF, Manchester M5 3LZ, London E16 1DR, Glasgow G51 1DH, and Sheffield S3 8NU. All QAT roles require flexibility of location, including working from supplier sites and other business locations across the UK and occasionally abroad.

These roles sit in the His Majesty’s Passport Office (HMPO), Police and Public Protection Technology (PPPT) and Migration and Borders Technology Portfolio (MBTP) business areas.

What You Will Do

• Ownership of existing test frameworks and actively reviewing them, identifying the need for new frameworks, and delivering these at scale.
• Leading and coaching a team of test engineers, helping solve technical challenges, evaluating the efficacy of test engineering processes across projects, and suggesting improvements. Promote convergence and data-driven approaches within test engineering.
• Embracing innovation—evaluating tools and recommending approaches that benefit testing (e.g., virtualization, data mocking, contract testing, automated test data management, test results aggregation, release management). Enabling precise, real-time reports of automation test runs and roll-up reports.
• Managing test infrastructure usage and implementing approaches for running distributed, parallel tests. Using container and cloud technology to orchestrate faster, scalable tests while optimizing costs.
• Working with teams to promote the use of code scanning, code quality, accessibility testing, and observability tools.
• Participating in the QAT Test Engineering community and QAT recruitment to help grow it.

Essential Criteria

• Programming using Java to write secure, reusable, and maintainable automated tests and test utilities. Familiarity with thread management, synchronization, resource and memory management, and scripting languages like Bash or PowerShell.
• Using and implementing tools like Selenium, RestAssured, Serenity BDD (or similar), and build tools like Maven or Gradle; code management with Git.
• Using unit test frameworks like JUnit, assertion libraries, data serialization tools, security best practices (OWASP Top 10) and accessibility standards (WCAG) to design automated accessibility tests.
• Extensive use of CI/CD tools for pipeline automation; solid understanding of release pipeline concepts. Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Using POM test design pattern and SOLID principles. Implementing coding guidelines and standards with understanding of protocols and architectural styles in test implementation.
• Ability to engage with performance testing engineers and identify performance bottlenecks; ability to read, interpret, and articulate performance reports.
