About us

The Department of Chemical Engineering is routinely recognised among the very top departments in Europe and among the top 20 departments in the world in the QS World University Subject Rankings. The department has an extensive research portfolio across a wealth of areas, from the molecular scale to the scale of large industrial plants, at the heart of which lie chemical transformations by which raw materials are converted to products such as fuels, commodity and specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, construction materials and consumer products. Our current awareness of the world’s finite material and energy resources demands that these products are obtained in a sustainable, efficient and environmentally acceptable fashion and that new energy solutions are implemented. Within this exciting and demanding context, the department develops innovative and impactful technological solutions that leverage advances in basic science addressing Global Grand Challenges in domains such as Advanced Manufacturing; Functional Materials; Health; and Energy, Water, CO2, Environment and Sustainability.

UCL Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK and has world-class standing. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and has an extensive research portfolio across a wealth of areas, from molecular scale to complex systems.

The department is one of the founding members of the Sargent Centre for Process Systems Engineering and is home to the EPSRC “Frontier Engineering” Centre for Nature Inspired Engineering (CNIE), and the Electrochemical Innovation Laboratory (EIL). For more information see www.ucl.ac.uk/chemeng
