Legal Counsel, THE LABOUR PARTY UK

Salary: £58,084 per annum, with £1,153 gross allowance and £3,650 London weighting (if based in London). Progress to £64,694 over next 2 years.

Location: Head Office – Newcastle or Head Office – London.

Duration: Permanent.

Responsibilities:

• Provide legal advice and support to the General Counsel and other staff.
• Offer specialist advice to Labour councillors on local government law, standards regimes, and compliance issues.
• Instruct and work with external private practice lawyers as required.
• Continuously assess the Party’s compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:

• Qualified solicitor or barrister with significant in-house experience.
• Strong legal research and analytical skills; rapid development of expertise in unfamiliar areas.
• Excellent interpersonal skills; build rapport with diverse stakeholders including elected councillors.
• Political awareness and sensitivity; work in sensitive environments, tight deadlines, maintain confidentiality.
