Overview

Locum Consultant in Endocrinology & Diabetes role at the Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The post is a 12-month fixed-term contract based at the Great Western Hospital site in Swindon, with opportunities to work remotely.

Responsibilities

  • Provide inpatient and outpatient Endocrinology & Diabetes services as part of a dynamic team of consultants.
  • Inpatient Diabetes in-reaching service and outpatient clinics, including a Hot Diabetes Clinic, general Diabetes and Endocrine clinics, and Thyrotoxicosis clinic.
  • Participate in monthly Diabetes and Endocrine / Radiology MDT meetings and ward cover in a rotating schedule (1 month in 4; GIM on-call on a 1:16 weekdays and roughly 1:8 weekends).
  • Contribute to teaching, examination, accreditation duties, and undergraduate/postgraduate/continuing medical education activity.
  • Provide cover for consultant colleagues during periods of leave according to Trust policy.
  • Engage in Quality Improvement and continued medical education activities.
  • Participate in an out-of-hours consultant rota for unselected medical take, as detailed in the job plan.
  • Work from home one day per week where feasible, with ward and inpatient cross-cover weeks excluded.

Management and Leadership

  • Support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Division Management Team.
  • Contribute to leadership and development of services under the direction of the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director, aligned with the Trust’s business plans.
  • Ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Division; support the Divisional Director to achieve objectives.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in other Divisions within the Trust.
  • Assist in cost-effective utilisation of resources within budgets; manage clinical governance, risk, and policy development in line with standing orders and financial procedures.
  • Supervise junior colleagues and participate in departmental/trust-wide teaching programs; undertake investigations and report writing for incidents as required.
  • Demonstrate STAR values and NHS Constitution principles in decision-making.

About the Department

The department handles a broad range of Endocrinology & Diabetes conditions and offers specialist clinics across multiple sub-specialties, supported by MDTs and links with the OCDEM centre for tertiary input. The Diabetes and Endocrine Department serves a large regional population and is based at a hospital campus that supports teaching activities with universities in the region.
