Manager, Software Engineering (UK Remote)

New Today

Overview

We are looking for a self-sufficient, highly motivated Senior Software Engineering Manager to lead and maintain two products within the Turnitin Integrity portfolio. This is a leadership role that requires a blend of technical expertise, project management skills, and strong people management abilities. You will work closely with Product Managers, Customer Success teams, and other Engineering teams across the globe, ensuring seamless collaboration. You must be skilled at prioritization, problem-solving, and context switching, as your time will be distributed across multiple projects. One team is responsible for a product in maintenance mode with a focus on optimization, efficiency, and continuous improvement. The secondary team is in a growth phase. This is a people-first leadership role, where you will manage individual contributors (ICs), provide feedback, mentor, coach, and support career development. The ideal candidate is technically proficient and an empathetic, influential leader who fosters a positive and high-performing engineering culture.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and empower two engineering teams, ensuring alignment with company objectives and high-impact delivery. Collaborate with globally distributed teams, product managers, and solution architects to drive alignment and innovation. Set clear, measurable goals and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • People management and development. Manage and support the individuals within your teams, promote well-being and psychological safety, conduct regular one-on-ones, and provide constructive feedback to help team members grow.
  • Drive technical excellence and delivery. Define, develop, and implement best practices, oversee roadmaps and milestones, and ensure alignment with business goals. Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality products on time while addressing cross-departmental dependencies.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight. Offer architectural direction and ensure scalable, sustainable designs. Balance perfection with pragmatism to deliver maintainable, innovative software that is "well enough to ship".
  • Analyze metrics and drive continuous improvement. Use quality metrics and development analytics to evaluate team performance and identify optimization opportunities.
  • Innovate and stay current. Keep up-to-date with tools, frameworks, and methodologies; bring recommendations for change to leadership and the team.
  • Promote transparency and communication. Maintain an open, transparent environment and actively communicate progress and updates to stakeholders.
  • Ownership and accountability. Take passionate ownership of the software your team builds and lead by example.
  • Collaborate across teams. Build strong relationships with peers across engineering, product, customer support, and sales; ensure effective communication with external stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong hands-on engineering skills with understanding of modern software development practices, including AWS, Java, and Lambda.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with a proven track record of working across multiple teams and products.
  • Proven project management experience with the ability to prioritize and deliver on multiple initiatives.
  • Deep understanding of software development methodologies, tools, and processes.
  • Experience in engineering leadership roles across multiple teams, including hiring, mentoring, and team development.
  • Strong track record of coaching and mentoring both individual contributors and peers.
  • Ability to influence and motivate teams to achieve high performance.
  • Hands-on experience with scalable front-end and back-end applications.
  • Experience collaborating across time zones and geographies with a flexible working style.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to challenges.
  • Experience in a similar role in a high-tech environment.
