Marine Mechanical / Piping Design Engineer

Location: Portsmouth – Hybrid and flexible working arrangements available. Please speak to your recruiter about options for this role.

Salary: £36,575 – £38,575

What you’ll be doing

• Conduct on-board ship trials and surveys and communicate with other departments, Design Services disciplines, customers and suppliers
• Carry out technical investigations into operational problems or developments; develop and prepare solutions, individually or as part of a team
• Support the development of best practices to improve capability and performance of tools and processes
• Produce technical drawing guidance packages, detail parts lists and inventories using AutoCAD / Inventor design
• Represent the Mechanical / Piping team at project design reviews or support other colleagues on platform tasking
• Use internal and external databases to source information

Your skills and experiences

Essential

• AutoCAD / Inventor design experience and the ability to produce detailed manufacturing & assembly drawings
• Understanding of detailed system and technical drawings including P&IDs, diagrammatics, piping isometrics, and ship system materials and equipment (symbols)
• Knowledge of maritime warship / commercial systems (fluid-based, mechanical) and ability to perform basic pressure loss and flow calculations to size pipework
• Knowledge of mechanical manufacturing processes
• Ship experience (build or in-service) with understanding of RN ship / commercial mechanical / piping systems for various vessel classes
• Understanding of military and commercial ship-related standards

About Design Services Team

Design Services is the BAE Systems Maritime ‘in-service’ technical support cell located within Portsmouth Naval Base. We employ approx. 180 personnel across Mechanical, Electrical & Combat Systems, Structures / Outfit and HVAC to create modification design packages and reports for installation and integration on legacy warships. We work with Safety, Naval Architects and others to provide a broad mix of engineering expertise.
