Job Description

The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve, so welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds. We also welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share.

The work of the Environment Agency is vitally important to everyone in England. From air and water quality to conservation and ecology, we’re responsible for protecting wildlife and creating better places in which to live.

Using the right models, tools, and technologies is fundamental to every decision we make in protecting and enhancing the environment. At the heart of this is our Modelling and Tools team, which not only delivers expert technical services, advice, and guidance but also champions a culture of continuous improvement. By ensuring our data and applications are managed effectively, the team drives innovation and excellence across the organisation.

As a centre of excellence, the team leads the way on IT strategy, and support for modelling, constantly evolving our capabilities to meet emerging challenges. We are committed to refining our approaches, embracing new technologies, and embedding best practices to ensure our modelling landscape remains robust, scalable, and future-ready.

Join us, and you’ll play a pivotal role in integrating modelling activity across diverse business areas, while helping to shape strategies that anticipate and respond to future modelling needs. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone eager to gain hands-on experience in managing and governing our modelling estate, while actively contributing to a culture of learning, adaptation, and continuous enhancement.

The team

You’ll be part of the Modelling and Tools team, collaborating with stakeholders across Digital, Data and Technology Services, IT suppliers, and users throughout the Environment Agency. You’ll contribute to forward-looking IT projects, including the continuing development of our Central Modelling Platform, a cloud-based environment designed to scale with future demands. We are constantly exploring new technologies and methodologies to ensure our modelling capabilities evolve in step with the needs of the organisation and the environment.

Experience/skills Required

We’re looking for a proactive communicator who is passionate about driving continuous improvement and delivering value to users. You’ll be organised, self-motivated, and collaborative as well as skilled at gathering requirements, listening to diverse perspectives, and translating them into effective solutions.

You’ll advocate for consistency/strategic alignment in modelling practices, while supporting the adoption of new technologies/approaches. Your role will involve resolving business challenges, promoting adherence to model management principles, and helping to embed a culture of innovation and improvement.

This role offers an opportunity to deepen expertise in service development and management, while also exploring emerging areas like data science and cloud technologies. You’ll help shape our roadmap to ensure it meets the evolving needs of users today and into the future.

Experience with service management and cloud hosting is beneficial, as is an awareness of open source tools. A growth mindset and a commitment to continuous learning are essential.

Contact and additional information

Your capability answers will be used to determine interview selection. Please draw out your skills and experience relative to this role in your response.

As this is a national role the working location is flexible, but you’ll have an EA office base location. Some travel and overnight stays will be required.

You’ll have an incident management objective in your development plan. We’ll support you to find a role to suit your needs and circumstances. Appropriate training will be given.

This is a permanent role and we are supportive of creating a diverse work force.

Interviews will held by MS Teams. in the latter part of September.
