The Opportunity
We are seeking a technically proficient individual with experience and drive to lead decarbonisation in projects during design, construction and aftercare. The individual will have the ability to lead the progression of decarbonisation knowledge in our Business Development teams, work with Clients to develop decarbonisation solutions and then to win the delivery work by preparing bid winning responses to Net Zero Carbon (NZC) requirements.
This role is specifically focussed on developing products and processes that drive decarbonisation of the buildings Tilbury Douglas provides for its Clients across Healthcare, Education, Local Authorities, Central Government and Water. The role will also engage in other sustainability and environmental matters, such as carbon reduction initiatives for our own business.
Depending on the candidate, the role will be initially focused in the north of England, moving to national coverage across England, Wales and Scotland as our service model develops.
This role allows for flexible hybrid working from home, regional offices, and the head office.
What you will be doing
Supporting NZC Business Development
- Working with Clients and our supply chain to develop and evaluate decarbonisation solutions for their estate, including funding options.
- Working with Business Unit Business Development Managers to develop their carbon knowledge and increase sales through better informed conversations with potential Clients.
- Leading carbon solution development for bids as the Subject Matter Expert, writing and authoring bid winning carbon responses for tender submissions.
- Preparing NZC Case Studies for website publication.
- Raising the profile of Tilbury Douglas as a leading decarbonisation service provider through Client presentations and speaking at carbon conferences and networking with industry decarbonisation bodies such as UKGBC and CLC.
Driving Whole Life carbon reduction in projects
- Working with our National Decarbonisation Service Director to support development of Tilbury Douglas’ decarbonisation strategy and service delivery.
- Leading the development of innovative project NZC Plans with decarbonisation strategies, designs and solutions for the newbuild, refurbished and retrofitted buildings we deliver for our Clients.
- Working with Business Unit Decarbonisation Champions and Design Managers to drive reduction in whole life carbon during the design process to achieve project NZC goals within the affordability envelope.
- Using digital design models to inform carbon optioneering to lower whole life carbon, optimise building cost and operational performance.
- Driving decarbonisation for low carbon construction methods and technologies, including building services
- Working with our Procurement teams to drive reduction in Scope 3 embodied carbon, considering End of Life and the Circular Economy, particularly for building services.
- Overseeing the production of accurate Whole Life Carbon Assessments across the project lifecycle, using industry standard software such as One Click.
- Working with aftercare managers to complete Post Occupancy, Building Performance Evaluations.
- Consolidating and reviewing completed Whole Life Carbon Assessment and Building Performance Evaluation data to inform future carbon strategy for building designs and materials selection
What we will need from you
- Up to date with UK best practice NZC guidance, standards and solutions applicable to construction.
- Experience of decarbonisation across a broad range of public sector projects e.g. Health, Education, MoJ, Defence, National and Local Government, Blue Light, Infrastructure.
- Experience of funding application process e.g. Low Carbon Skills Fund, Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, Carbon Energy Fund (desirable)
- Knowledge of marketplace for decarbonisation services with established Client contacts and understanding of routes to bring Client projects to market via established frameworks.
- Networked into industry decarbonisation bodies e.g. UK Green Building Council, Construction Leadership Council CO2nstructZero.
- Ability to author/edit technical and quality narrative for bid responses.
- Comprehensive understanding of design and development process and how to drive carbon reduction throughout design, construction and building operations in accordance with PAS 2038 and PAS 2080 principles, including through supply chain engagement.(PAS 2080 Accreditation experience desirable)
- Up to date construction and building services industry knowledge of NZC strategies, carbon reduction plans and roadmaps, whole life carbon assessments and key design decisions to deliver high carbon performance.
- Strong communication and presentation skills which can be tailored to a range of audiences, seniorities and technical competencies.
- Educated to degree level in a construction / environmental related discipline.
- Chartered, with a recognised relevant professional body [e.g. IEMA] (desirable).
- Experienced in the use of NZC measurement tools e.g. One Click LCA and proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel & PowerPoint.
