Payroll & HR Manager

Compass Associates are recruiting a Payroll & HR Manager to join a growing business in Berkshire. Following an imminent acquisition, the successful candidate will manage payroll and HR for a diverse workforce across 200+ sites, including salaried, hourly, permanent, temporary, and part-time staff.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end payroll, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with HMRC regulations, pensions, and statutory obligations.
  • Provide HR support, including recruitment, onboarding, employee lifecycle management, and policy compliance.
  • Build strong relationships across the business and provide hands-on support for payroll system transitions.
  • Lead process improvements and collaborate with finance and HR teams.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years’ experience managing payroll in the UK, with exposure to HR responsibilities.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, pensions, and compliance.
  • Experience in HR administration or advisory roles, with the ability to manage recruitment and employee lifecycle processes.
  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • People-focused approach with the ability to build trust and manage relationships effectively.
  • Payroll qualification (CIPP) or HR qualification (CIPD) desirable but not essential.
  • Willingness to work a minimum of 3 days on site.

Salary and Benefits

The salary is circa £60,000 - £70,000, dependent on experience, and benefits include:

  • Hands-on, varied role with responsibility across payroll and HR.
  • Opportunity to lead processes and implement improvements.
  • Supportive work environment with close collaboration between finance and HR teams.
  • Commutable from Berkshire and surrounding areas.

Location

This position is based in Berkshire and is commutable from Reading, Guildford, Watford, and High Wycombe.
