Base pay range
The Payroll Manager will lead my clients Payroll ensuring seamless, compliant, and high-quality payroll and HR service delivery across the UK, France, and South Africa. This role is central to driving operational excellence through accurate payroll processing, adherence to employment law and internal policies, and strong stakeholder management with third-party providers such as ADP. The postholder will champion continuous improvement, digital transformation, and the development of robust policies to support HR and reward operations.
The ideal candidate will bring proven expertise in HR operations and payroll management, with deep knowledge of UK employment law and payroll legislation. Strong leadership, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills are essential, alongside the ability to build trusted relationships and drive process efficiencies.

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Payroll Manager to lead the delivery of accurate, compliant, and efficient payroll services. This role will oversee end-to-end payroll operations, ensuring employees are paid correctly and on time, while also driving continuous improvement, compliance, and stakeholder satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee the monthly payroll process for employees across UK, France, South Africa
- Ensure accurate and timely processing of salaries, bonuses, overtime, pensions, and other statutory payments.
- Maintain compliance with HMRC and international payroll legislation, employment law, and company policies.
- Act as the primary point of contact for payroll queries, resolving issues with professionalism and discretion.
- Manage relationships with payroll providers, tax authorities, auditors, and other third parties.
- Lead on payroll reporting, including reconciliations, year-end returns (P11D, P60, PSA), and audit requirements.
- Partner with HR, Finance, and Reward teams to align payroll with wider people and business objectives.
- Identify and deliver process improvements, automation opportunities, and system enhancements to increase accuracy and efficiency.
- Ensure data security, GDPR compliance, and confidentiality of all payroll records.
- Lead, coach, and develop payroll team members to deliver a best-in-class service.
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in managing complex payroll operations, ideally across multi-country or large-scale organisations.
- Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation and HMRC requirements (international payroll knowledge desirable).
- Experience with payroll systems (e.g., ADP, Workday, SAP, Oracle, iTrent, etc.) and advanced Excel skills.
- Strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain technical payroll issues clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to manage confidential data with discretion and integrity.
