Payroll Team Leader – Delt Shared Services Ltd

Location: Plymouth / Hybrid (approx. 2 days per week in office)

Contract Type: Permanent, Full-time (37 hours per week)

We’re looking for an experienced Payroll Team Leader to take responsibility for the delivery of a high-quality, complex payroll service. Supporting circa 8,500 employees across NHS, Teachers, Local Government, and third sector organisations, this role sits at the heart of our Payroll Bureau, ensuring our customers receive a reliable, accurate, and compliant service every time.

As Team Leader, you will lead, motivate, and develop a team of Payroll professionals to provide an exceptional service that meets both internal and external customer expectations. You’ll also play a key role in driving efficiencies, maintaining compliance, and building strong, collaborative relationships with stakeholders.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Leading and motivating a Payroll Delivery Team to provide accurate and timely payroll services.
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations, policies, and conditions of service.
  • Managing reconciliation processes and all periodic payroll and pension returns, meeting mandatory deadlines.
  • Providing professional advice and guidance on complex payroll and legislative queries.
  • Driving efficiencies through process improvement, technology use, and training across the team.
  • Supporting policy development and sharing payroll expertise with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Fostering a culture of customer service excellence, building strong and trusted relationships.
  • Overseeing team performance management, resource planning, and issue escalation.

What We’re Looking For

  • A recognised payroll qualification (e.g. Diploma in Payroll Management) or equivalent senior-level payroll experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of pay-related legislation, pension schemes, and terms and conditions of service.
  • Experience managing high-volume, technology-enabled payroll processes and reconciliations.
  • Strong leadership skills with a proven ability to motivate and develop a team.
  • Experience in managing customer relationships, including service reporting and issue resolution.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and staying current with payroll regulations and best practice.
