Overview
Our Local Authority Client is looking for a Planning Area Lead to join their busy planning team on a contractual basis. This role is responsible as a Planning Lead for the East and South areas of Somerset and will include strategic direction, attendance at planning committee, complaints and assisting in the day to day operations of the service.

Somerset / Hybrid 2 days onsite per week
Salary: £61.24 per hour - PAYE • £83.01 per hour Umbrella/LTD
Hours: Full time 37 hours per week
Location: Somerset with hybrid arrangement (2 days onsite per week; East Office Mendip and South Office Yeovil)
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee the development proposals within the planning area, ensuring they meet local, regional, and national regulations and standards.
- Lead and support a team of planning professionals, providing guidance and fostering a collaborative working environment.
- Advise on and interpret planning policies, regulations, and best practices to stakeholders, including developers, community members, and government agencies.
- Engage with stakeholders, including community groups, local authorities, and private developers, to ensure their interests are considered in the planning process.
- Conduct research and analysis to inform planning strategies and initiatives, assessing proposed developments\' social, economic, and environmental impacts.
- Collaborate with other departments and external agencies to align planning activities with broader community and organisational goals.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and documentation for planning committees and public meetings.
- Stay current with planning trends, regulations, and innovations to provide the best possible advice and services.
- Facilitate public consultations and community outreach programs to gather input and foster transparency in the planning process.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in planning, Urban Development, Architecture, or a related field. A masters degree is preferred.
- Proven experience in urban planning, project management, or a related area.
- Strong knowledge of local, regional, and national planning policies, regulations, and practices.
- Excellent leadership and team management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven track record of engaging effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficient in planning software and tools, as well as Microsoft Office Suite.
