Police Misconduct and Vetting Solicitor - Secondment Opportunity

Position: Secondment for 2 years, full time (37.5 hours per week). Hybrid/Remote working. Salary up to £53,482 plus a £2,000 South East Allowance if hybrid, plus a generous benefits package. The Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) is an armed police service dedicated to protecting nuclear material and facilities. To be eligible, you must be employed by a Police Force and have the agreement of your line manager for the secondment.

We are looking for a Police Misconduct & Vetting Solicitor to provide a comprehensive legal service in respect of misconduct and vetting proceedings, with responsibilities across employment law, police law, civil litigation (excluding public injury), public procurement, data protection compliance and other related legal matters.

Responsibilities

  • Advise upon and manage cases involving police misconduct and police vetting reviews and withdrawals.
  • Undertake representation and preparation in respect of Police Misconduct, Police Vetting Appeals and Police Appeals Tribunals.
  • Act as an adviser on Police Performance Hearings as required.
  • Attend misconduct hearings, vetting appeals and Police Appeals Tribunals and undertake advocacy when appropriate.
  • Actively identify training and developing members of the team and colleagues.
  • Instruct external advisers in relation to Police Misconduct, Police Vetting and Police Appeals Tribunals.
  • Assist in identifying governance or procedural changes required arising from changes in relevant police regulations.
  • Conduct horizon scanning on changes to relevant regulations and sharing key changes from legislative changes, learning from other forces and key case law updates with the Legal Services Team, Professional Standards Team and Vetting.
  • Deputise for other members of the Legal Services team where required.

Qualifications

  • Qualified solicitor, Barrister or FILEX with rights of audience in England and Wales is essential.
  • Significant experience of advising and representing in regulatory work is essential.
  • Advocacy experience in Police Misconduct, Administrative or Regulatory Proceedings is highly desirable.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to act under pressure and respond quickly to changing and conflicting demands is essential.
  • Knowledge of Police Conduct Regulations, Police Reform Act 2002 and the Police Vetting Code of Practice and APP is desirable.
