Power Systems Simulation Engineer (EMT/PSCAD)

9 Days Old

Join to apply for the Power Systems Simulation Engineer (EMT/PSCAD) role at WSP

What if you could shape a career as unique as you? At WSP, you can grow and take on challenges with a global reach and diverse, talented colleagues who help you expand your horizons. We aim to become a leader in the energy transition through innovative technologies, renewables, and transforming existing assets on the journey to a decarbonised society.

Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Electromagnetic Transients (EMT) Studies Expert to join our Power Systems Consulting team. The successful candidate will analyse and improve the transient performance of power systems, ensuring the stability, reliability, and resilience of electrical grids. You will provide expert insights into the integration of renewable energy sources, HVDC systems, and FACTS devices, and conduct detailed simulations to support operational and planning decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Model and simulate the performance of renewable energy sources (e.g., wind, solar) and converter-based systems (e.g., HVDC, STATCOM, SVC), including their control systems, to assess grid impact.
  • Develop EMT models from real-world data and equipment specifications for accurate grid component representation.
  • Conduct EMT simulations using PSCAD to analyse system behaviour under transient conditions.
  • Perform detailed electromagnetic transient studies (switching, fault studies, energisation, TRV/ZMP, insulation coordination, etc.) to evaluate transient response and support equipment design.
  • Analyse voltage transients, switching overvoltages, and lightning surges; provide protection recommendations and system improvements.
  • Lead or participate in grid compliance studies (EMT-focused) to ensure generation and transmission projects meet regulatory and technical standards.

Qualifications / What we will be looking for

  • Experience in grid integration of renewables, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and smart grid technologies.
  • Knowledge of national grid codes and standards (e.g., Grid Code, ENTSO-E, NERC, CIGRE).
  • Knowledge of grid-forming technology and different control architectures and implementations.
