Job Summary
The Maternity Department at University Hospitals Plymouth is seeking a Practice Development Midwife to join our dynamic senior midwifery team. We provide care for approximately 3,800 women and babies per year and are proud to be part of the largest teaching hospital in the South West.
As Practice Development Midwife, you will play a key role in ensuring that all members of our multidisciplinary team are supported to provide excellent standards of care through a framework of training and education which supports continuing professional development.
You will be a kind and approachable clinical midwifery expert, leading by example, and be widely accessible to support staff with their training and educational needs. You will work closely with the Clinical Governance Team to ensure that our maternity workforce provides high‑quality, evidence‑based care in line with national policies.

Responsibilities
Lead and coordinate the maternity education team.
Provide professional support and line management for Band 5 preceptee midwives.
Ensure all staff have necessary mandatory training related to all equipment used.
Maintain own and others’ professional, educational, and training needs, and keep mandatory and professional updates to ensure clinical and professional credibility.
Undertake an annual Training Needs Analysis.
Recruit, induct, and manage staff in accordance with Trust Human Resources Policies and departmental requirements.
Develop induction programmes for new staff.
Communicate with university educationalists and involve them in in‑service education programmes.
Support and train midwives in all clinical areas, promoting and developing midwifery skills.
Provide day and night time clinical escalation cover as part of an on‑call rota.
Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary clinical practice and introduce evidence‑based changes where beneficial.
Work closely with the multidisciplinary team, including Consultant Midwife, Labour Ward Leads, Medical Staff, Matrons, and the Clinical Governance Team to foster continuous quality improvement.
Person Specification
Essential
Well‑rounded demonstrable clinical midwifery experience.
Good understanding of risk management and complaints procedures.
Up‑to‑date with the NHS Agenda, national directives, and all governance aspects.
Registered Midwife.
Proven evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
Educated to a minimum of 1st degree level (or able to demonstrate evidence that you are working at degree level / commenced degree pathway).
Must be capable of carrying out the physical activities required for the job.
Effective communication skills, written and verbal, with fluency and clarity at all levels.
Effective influencing skills with senior health‑care professionals.
Desirable
Demonstrable experience of staff development and performance management.
IV cannulation.
Documented evidence of continued appropriate studies.
Further relevant development to postgraduate certificate or equivalent.
Experience of involvement in successful change management.
Proven ability to present complex and sensitive information to service users and staff at all levels.
