A Little More About Your Role
Drawing upon extensive and long‑standing experience, WSP’s aviation experts plan, design and manage the construction of the airports of tomorrow, with a focus on resilience, sustainability and smart technologies. We are currently looking for a Principal Airfield Civil Engineer to help deliver some of our exciting UK and international engineering projects. The role will require good knowledge and understanding of multi‑disciplinary project delivery to join our team of technical experts in the UK. There will be opportunities for international travel to work with overseas clients and WSP aviation teams worldwide, as well as the opportunity to develop your own CPD and support the CPD progression of the more junior Engineers within the team.
Responsibilities
- Act as the design lead for airfield civil engineering projects.
- Take ownership of the successful delivery of projects whilst giving leadership and direction to more junior team members, including planning their work and managing the delivery of multiple technical engineering projects.
- Leading and undertaking the preparation of technical reports, calculations, drawings and specifications related to the delivery of airfield engineering projects in both the UK and overseas.
- Undertaking/contributing towards technical design reviews to meet the WSP quality management requirements.
- Effectively and confidently communicating and coordinating designs with team members, industry associates and clients.
- Identifying and managing design risks, issues and Request for Information (RFIs).
- Ensuring all deliverables and milestones are achieved to cost/quality/time targets.
- Acting as a role model for more junior staff within the Airfield Engineering team. Providing technical guidance and mentorship.
- Championing excellent health and safety practice, including safety in design, site visit safety and compliance with CDM regulations.
- Support Project Managers by undertaking project progress monitoring and contributing to the development of appropriate project controls, including change management, information management and document control.
- Responding to client directions in a professional and customer‑focused manner and devoting relationships with clients, peers and others who influence future business.
- Contribute to the continuous growth of the Airfield Engineering team in line with the growth strategy.
- Identify, capitalise and develop existing client relationships to maintain future business.
What We Are Looking For
- A University degree relevant to civil engineering, construction, design or related discipline.
- Chartered or Incorporated Status (MICE, MCIHT or equivalent) or equivalent demonstrable experience is preferable but not essential.
- Experience of delivering large, technically complex multi‑disciplinary airfield civil engineering projects.
- Experience and knowledge of international airfield design standards such as ICAO, CAA, EASA and FAA.
- Knowledge and experience of using Civil 3D and relevant other airfield engineering design software packages such as AviPlan, SkySafe and FAARFIELD is preferable.
- Knowledge and understanding of construction contracts (i.e., NEC) and processes is preferable.
- Excellent written, verbal communication skills with an aptitude to presenting technical information to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Enjoy working in a team environment, sharing ideas and collaborating with colleagues and able to demonstrate a time when you managed to solve complex problems.
- Competent in independently leading technical engineering projects, and confident in making technical engineering decisions for projects which you are responsible for delivering.
