Job title: Principal Control & Instrumentation Engineer
Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Filton or Manchester (2 days minimum on site per fortnight). We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this role.
Salary: Negotiable dependant on experience.
Responsibilities
- Develop a functional design for the Vehicle Control solution for SSNA.
- Provide oversight of the vehicle control solution delivery through a complex stakeholder network and support the vehicle control strategy.
- Work closely with the Office of the Chief Engineer to support assurance activities.
- Collaborate with the Engineering Manager to deliver the vehicle control system and report progress through agile toolsets.
- Deliver responses to the engineering delivery plan and ensure the plan is delivered to schedule.
- Provide guidance on engineering methods/processes to deliver the engineering delivery plan.
- Work with the Engineering Delivery Team across varying levels of SQEP to develop technical solutions and nurture team development.
- Engage with legacy stakeholders in the development of a technical solution from a known baseline design.
Your skills and experiences
Essential- Experience in developing a C&I design for a large-scale C&I system, meeting functional, defence standards, industrial standards, etc.
- Experience managing non-functional requirements (e.g., EMC, shock) to meet industrial compliance.
- Experience authoring and/or reviewing design documents such as I/O schedules, functional design specifications, functional chronicles, interface control documents, etc.
- Degree-level qualification (or equivalent experience) in a relevant STEM subject (Engineering/ Physics/ Maths/ Science).
- Understanding of control system architecture and communication protocols (e.g., RS-485, PROFIBUS).
- Experience with IEC 61508 – Functional Safety (or similar) and production of supporting evidence for safety claims.
- Experience with manoeuvring systems from various industries.

The Platform Complex Systems team
You will help define and shape the design of the Royal Navy’s next generation attack class submarine and work to implement legacy technology and new control concepts while collaborating with colleagues within Submarines, wider stakeholders, suppliers, and the Royal Navy. Relocation support packages are available across Submarines roles, subject to eligibility criteria.
