Job Description
Principal Drainage Engineer
Location: Birmingham
Salary: Circa £50,000-£55,000 + package
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Drainage Engineer to join a growing civil engineering team supporting a diverse range of development and infrastructure projects across multiple sectors, including residential, commercial, industrial, defence, and education.
You will take a leading role in the design, planning, and management of drainage and utilities infrastructure, including SuDS, public sewers, and related civil works such as highways, earthworks, and external layouts. The position also includes project management responsibilities and line management or mentoring of junior staff.
Responsibilities
- Produce drainage strategies, flood risk assessments, and technical reports.
- Develop drainage designs and models using software such as MicroDrainage, InfoDrainage, and AutoTrack.
- Manage S104, S106, and S185 approvals.
- Oversee design delivery across project stages, from planning through construction.
- Liaise with clients, contractors, and local authorities.
- Support team leadership, mentoring, and workload management.
Requirements
- Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
- Chartered or working towards ICE or CIWEM membership.
- 7-10 years' post-graduate experience in drainage or civil infrastructure design.
- Strong technical knowledge of SuDS Manual, Building Regulations, DMRB, and related design codes.
- Proven experience managing projects, fees, and resources.
