Principal Engineer (Roads) – WSP, Leeds

Join WSP to lead day‑to‑day technical delivery of highway consultancy services from feasibility through construction. This client‑facing role requires a proven track record of delivering road schemes at local or national level.

Responsibilities

  • Manage projects ensuring coordination of multi‑disciplinary inputs.
  • Liaise with clients, build trusted relationships and provide proactive advice.
  • Lead and review technical aspects of projects.
  • Support team members to maximize contribution to project goals.
  • Prepare fee proposals, manage budgets and oversee financial aspects.
  • Develop and deliver discrete and overall project solutions.
  • Lead and manage staff in producing design drawings, construction details, specifications and bills of quantities.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental legislation and quality standards.
  • Coordinate team resources and assign roles effectively.

Qualifications

  • Experience in highway design and/or drainage at all project stages – road geometry, junctions, active travel, drainage, restraint, sign & marking.
  • Experience leading one or more design disciplines.
  • Contract document preparation, administration or site supervision with Public Works Contracts.
  • Proficiency in design software (Autodesk Civils 3D, Bentley OpenRoads Designer, InfoDrainage, PDS).
  • Strong change‑management skills, communicating impacts on programme, cost and quality.
  • Excellent client, stakeholder and interpersonal communication.
  • Chartered Civil Engineer or Incorporated Engineer with extensive post‑professional qualification.
  • Deep knowledge of relevant design codes: Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, local authority guidance and CDM compliance.
